School of Humanities and Social Sciences
What does it take to make a human being?

Human societies are produced by human beings. But what is it that makes us, and our societies, truly human? The human species is distinguished by its use of language and by its ability to care about, and care for, others. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences includes departments that cover the entire academic spectrum essential for human beings to develop their fundamental humanity and contribute to the building of compassionate societies. If you wish to pursue the humanities, we offer Language and Culture studies. If sociology is your field of interest, we offer Human Sciences studies. And for those who wish to nurture the well-being of others, we offer Social Welfare studies. In whichever of these areas your academic interests lie, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences can provide you with the time and workspace you need to pursue these interests seriously. Why not spend the next four years of your life awakening your human potential at Osaka Prefecture University?

Developing our humanity

The word ‘humanity’ covers a lot of ground. Certainly one part of this ground is the central element present in all human interaction--human language in all its forms, and uses. Language can be used to convey facts, but it is also extremely effective in conveying truths that are not a matter of scientific fact. The study of languages and literatures falls within the realm of the “humanities,” but there is also much more to being human. When human beings interact with each other, mutual relationships are established and societies are formed. The study of our humanity includes the examination of human cultures and social groups in all their dynamic variety. It also includes the structures and systems set up within our societies through which people work for the welfare of others. In whatever direction your fascination with human life takes you, the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences will welcome you and attempt to accommodate your interests.
